2007 A Big Success for Kyle

Consistency was the name of the game for Kyle. Though we had 10 rain outs we still managed to get in 17 races. Kyle finished in the top five 12 times with 15 top tens. The two times he finished out of the top ten we had mechanical problems. 2007 was a very good season indeed.

2007 Review

Freedom Raceway

Kyle was always successful at Freedom in Karts and sprint cars. One would assume he would also be good in the Late Models. Well he was. We were scheduled for 15 races but due to track financial problems three were cancelled. We lost three to rain. Out of the remaining 9 events Kyle finished in the top 5 every time. 2 were seconds and could very well have been wins if the cautions did or didn’t fall correctly.

At the close of the season Kyle finished 3rd in track points and 2nd in Fastrak point for the track.

2007 Review

McKean County Raceway

McKean County Raceway is in Eldred Pa. It is on the fringes of Late Model country. Needless to say Kyle had to race against many experienced drivers at this track. Not to be intimidated or outdone Kyle proved he could run with these driver. We were scheduled to run 13 events. 6 races were lost to rain and Kyle missed one to attend a college graduation. Of the remaining races Kyle finished 3 in the top five and all in the top ten.

In the final count Kyle finished the season 5th in McKean County point and 3rd in Fastrak points for the track.

Thanks to all of those who helped make 2007 happen!

9/2/07
McKean County Championship Night

Kyle Finishes Fourth in Feature!

Wayland NY- It was a very nice night for racing, cool, no rain, but not cold... a fall evening. Where did the summer go? There were 19 Late Models on hand for the season Championship. It is great to see that this new class in its first year has pulled this number of cars.
Kyle "can't draw a number" Drum, drew a 57 out of 60 for his back row starting spot in the qualifier. He drove his way to third, then was tagged in the left rear side and partially spun, relegating him to a 5th place finish. Not to worry... because it was Championship night the cars lined up according to the point standings for the feature. Kyle started 5th. The race went green for the entire 30 laps. The top five cars drove away from the field and were in lapped traffic in no time. Kyle did a great job hitting his marks, passing lapped cars, and staying right with Greg Oaks who was running third. After several attempts to get the third spot the race was over with Kyle coming home in 4th. Once again the leaders were right together at the end, just proving this class is a good one with no one person walking away because he can afford a big motor.
In the end Kyle finishes the season 5th in points, having missed one event early in the year. There will be a year end review in the next week or two. There is one event left for the year and that is the big Fall event at McKean County. They will be running a big dollar event for Kyle's class on the 27th and a big event for the full Late Models on the 28th.

8/26/07          McKean Called..... Rain.... go figure...

Wayland NY- Racing was lost to rain once again at McKean County. This is the tenth race on our schedule this season called due to rain...  In our 15 years at this it is the worst on record. Up next... McKean County next Saturday. Word is we will run our Season Championship double point race then later in the evening we will run the make up feature from back in July.... weather permitting of course....

8/25/07          Season Championship Night at Freedom
Kyle Finishes 2nd in Feature, 3rd in Points

Wayland NY- With rain looming we ran no heat races but went right to the feature after a few hot laps. The heats didn't mater anyway since on Championship night you line up for the feature by points. Kyle started third behind Greg Oaks the point leader. Out side front row was John Lacki who was second in points. For the first couplelaps the three of them went at it often times three wide in the turns with Kyle on the inside of Greg and John on the top side. Greg finally settled into the top spot with John right behind then Kyle. John then committed to the top side to pass Greg which took a couple laps, while Kyle waited patiently behind the two. Once John cleared Greg he was gone. For then next ten laps or more it was the Kyle and Greg show. These two raced side by side for several laps, trading top side and low side, putting on a great show. Finally with five to go Kyle jumped to the top side, found some grip and was able to pass Greg. He then put distance between the two while he set sail for John. Hows the saying... ran out of laps... Kyle ended up second, not able to catch John. Great run, exciting race to watch.
This was the season for The Late Models at Freedom. In the final standings Greg Oaks is the Champion with John Lacki and the Kyle in third. We are all very proud and happy with the success Kyle has had this year. Dispite what people might think coming from sprints to a fendered car is a tough transition. Kyle appears to have it mastered and can run with the best.
If the rains hold off we will be at McKean County tonight for the Regional show. Next week is the season Championship at McKean as well.

You might want to catch the Buffalo News sports section in the next couple days. Kyle was interviewed by their reporter.

8/18/07         Rain Wins at Freedom.... Again

Wayland NY- I just can't figure this season out. It has been one of the driest yet we have had more rain-out this season then any I can remember. We were headed to the track last night only to drive into bad weather. The closer we got to Arcade the worse it looked. After repeated attempts to call the track, I was finally able to get an answer. "rained out, We had hail" was the response.
We are now down to one final week at Freedom. Maybe the final week ever at Freedom Raceway unless someone purchases the facility, improves it and keeps it going.
Up next... Friday night 24th, at Freedom and the Saturday night at McKean County. The McKean race is a Fastrak Regional so there will be a bunch of cars. Then the following week, September 1st, we race at McKean, season championship. That's it.... season over. The plan is that Kyle will compete in the September 27th event at McKean, part of their special year end show....

8/11/07         5th at Freedom

Wayland NY- It looked like rain until late in the day. It ended up being a nice night to race. Your starting position for the heat race is determined by a "pill" draw. Kyle has never been good at this... still isn't... out of thirty pills he drew... thirty. This put him at the back of his heat. Starting 8th he was able to get to 5th but missed the redraw for the feature.
Feature time Kyle started 9th. It didn't take long for him to work his way to 5th where he road for most of the race. We had a lake caution with one to go. Much to everyone's surprise the lined them up for the restart double file. This was great... on the restart Kyle jumped to third and by the time they were to turn three he had the inside line on second... oh wait.... another caution.... this time they did a single file restart. Follow the leader... Kyle finished 5th. Tom and Kyle did try a different setup which was closer but....As Kyle said after the race... "we have two weeks left, let's try extreme things, we are solidly in third in points and I want to win".
The track did announce that the Late Models season would end on August 24... leaving just to more weeks......

8/4/07         Another Top 5 at Freedom

Wayland NY- It was a nice night for racing last night. Track conditions were a little less then expected.... by feature time very dry with no bite. Kyle picked up his first checkered flag after several "should of hads" in his qualifier. He started third and on lap 4 powered by on the high side to take the win.
In the feature Kyle found the top side appealing once again, trying for the lead on several occasions but the caution flag would fly. Eventually the tires went away and he slid back to fourth. At the checkers the first four cars were nose to tail.
This is some of the best racing I've ever seen. These cars are so evenly match and the top drivers do a great job of give and take, not running into each other or spinner each other. If we had a harder tire on the right rear it might have been the edge we needed. Other then that it is the drivers, experience, and the car setup. In other words, everything racing is supposed to be.......

7/22/07         6th At McKean, Car Count at 19

Wayland NY- The car count has really come on nicely at McKean County with 19 Late Models in the pits last night. After a very poor heat race Kyle had to start 16th in the feature. Tom, Kyle, and Joel had some lengthy discussions then made a few changes to the car. What ever they did work. Kyle's car worked probably the best it has all season. He drove from 16th to 6th. In the last few laps in was clear he was faster then the two right in front of him but they were fighting for position as well, going around the track side by side. Kyle tried the three wide a time or two but that is much more difficult and he wasn't able to pull it off. We will take the 6th, be happy and move on.
There are several changes in upcoming events so please refer to the schedule. The Freedom situation has not been publicly announce but the word is we will not be back there this year. Other changes are this week the Saturday McKean race has been moved to this Thursday and it look as though there will be a tour race at Black Rock on August 11th. With that said we are now down to a hand full of races for the 2007 season. Doesn't seem possible does it????

7/8/07         McKean County Mid Season Championship, Kyle comes in 6th.....

Wayland NY- It was a good evening even though the final results don't show it. Kyle drove to third in his heat with a car that was working great. This allowed him to go to a dash for a starting spot in the feature. Having to draw for a spot in the dash is not a good thing for Kyle... eight numbers, guess which he drew?? eight. So he had to start tail in a dash and could not go any where since no one would move off the bottom.
Feature time found Kyle lining up 8th. In side of four laps he had moved into 4th with a good run going. Next lap around he was a little to hard getting into turn two and lost it. To the back we go... Now it was show time as Kyle had to pass a bunch of cars to get back to a respectable finish. In one lap he passed four cars on his way back toward the front.
After the race Kyle apologized the the crew then said that he wanted to give the fans a show... that he did.
Up next... McKean in two weeks. There is talk that there might be a couple other tracks in the area who might run this group this summer. We will have to see. At this point we are not sure of the status of Freedom...... time will tell....

7/6/07         Freedom Raceway... No Late Models for the Next Three weeks!!!

Wayland NY- Late yesterday Kyle received a phone call from the owner of Freedom Raceway informing us that he was not going to be running the Late Models for at least the next three weeks. Apparently he is experiencing some financial difficulties and has decided to cut the Late Models from the show. I respect the fact he called but I don't understand the decision. The Late Models each brought their fans and I believe supported their payout with pit admissions and fans in the stands. Time will tell....
So.... off to McKean County tomorrow night.....

6/30/07      Mid Season Championship at Freedom

Wayland NY- Friday night, It was mid season Championship night at Freedom which means you line up by points for the feature with the leader on the pole etc. Kyle is third in points and thus started third. After a couple restarts he moved to second which on the next restart wasn't where he wanted to be... on the outside on the double file restart. Kyle ran a very good races as did John Lacki, who won, and Greg Oaks who came in second. Though Kyle was all over Greg he just couldn't get the run at him coming off the turns. We will settle for third.
Kyle and Tom have made a couple sight adjustments to the car and Kyle said the car was the best it has been. Also said he ready is having fun driving this thing. Good, we got back to having fun.
Next up Freedom on Friday night then McKean on Saturday.....

6/24/07      Another Top Five For Kyle

Wayland NY- Saturday night, Kyle added another top five to his results this season with a fourth place finish at McKean County last night. Starting in ninth it appears he was the only car moving forward. After the race he said the car was OK but he did need for forward bite to help get off the turns a little better. We will however take the fourth place finish and continue to chase that first checked flag.
Next up is Freedom on Friday night. There is only one race on the schedule for the weekend.

6/23/07       A Very Good Race, Not Quite a Great Race!

Wayland NY- Friday night, Freedom Raceway, Kyle and Greg Oaks put on a tremendous show for the fans. With Greg in the lead Kyle caught him and worked him over good. By lap 18 it was clear Kyle's car was just a tick better coming off the turns. The problem was that Kyle and Greg were running pretty much the same line. In the next couple laps Kyle had found something and was getting ready to make his move as the laps wound down. On lap 22 the caution flew. This sealed it for Greg. Kyle's tire cooled under the caution and so did Greg's. Kyle needed the heat in the tires and it didn't look as though Greg did. With two laps to go Kyle just could not get it done.
After the race Kyle said, "I knew I could get him but I didn't want to do it to soon. I didn't want to give him a chance to get back by me because Greg would for sure try." Some times the caustion fall the right way, sometimes they don't.
McKean County tonight. We will see if we can get the first win.

6/18/07     Weekend Review

Wayland NY- Two regional races in two nights, Saturday at McKean County and Sunday the rain out at Eriez. Good and bad, or should I say not so good both nights. Saturday night was the first night that Kyle and the car were working together. Kyle was going for the lead in his heat only to spin out when the car didn't stick. This relegated him to a 22nd place starting spot in the feature, only of course after we did some major body work on the car. Before the feature Bob Close, Joel Smith, Tom Tabor, and Kyle  did a lot of talking and made changes to the car. Well it worked. Starting 22nd Kyle drove up to 10th by lap 13. On lap 13 Kyle was tagged in the rear and spun-out being hit on the other end by another car. Back to the rear again, 19th,with a very banged up car. It didn't mator however as Kyle proceed to drive up through the field again. By lap 25 and the checkers he had worked his way up to finish 10th. He passed 21 cars on his way to the finish... many cars twice.....
Sunday night was a different animal. No hot laps due to confusion at the track. Lucky we chose the right gear and right setup. Once again the car worked very well. After the heat race we chased a skip in the engine. A the start of the feature it was clear the skip was gone. It was also clear that we were spraying engine oil on the underside of the car. This oil was catching on fire in the turns. What put the fire out was the rush of air once going down the straight away. On lap 6 there was a caution so Tom had Kyle pull in. He was running 7th.
In all the success was getting Kyle and the car working together. Accomplished. We will see what this next weekend brings....

6/13/07     Looking Forward to this Weekend

Wayland NY- After rain-outs and no racing we are getting bored. We are all looking forward to getting back to racing. Kyle was at Little Valley in Bob Close's pit last Saturday night learning all he could and getting even more excited about Late Models.
Saturday night we will be at McKean County then on Sunday we make the trip back to Eriez to try the "new" track. Should be an interesting weekend....

6/8/07      And The Rains Came.... Again....Maybe?????

Wayland NY- Fridaynight- Freedom Raceway. It is now 5:45 PM and the racing has been called due to pending severe storms. How about that. We din't have to leave the driveway. Of course I look outside and it is sunny and 88 degrees... I don't see the rain. Did hear that it is now storming in Wyoming County. So... nothing now until next weekend.... Have a good one....

6/3/07      And The Rains Came.... Again....

Wayland NY- Saturday night- McKean County, The day looked great, so did early evening.... the sky started to look grey, then black, then there was lightening.. at this time Kyle's heat was being called to the shoot. Then the winds started to blow... ya... then the rain. And did it ever rain.... So we headed up the road and drove out of the rain in about five miles... go figure..... So let's recap.... McKean has been scheduled to race 7 nights and has actually race.... 2.... not good.
Up next Freedom on Friday night. Actually a Regional race as well. We should be in very good shape. we spent yesterday afternoon going through the car with Bob Close. We found a bad shock on the left rear as well as a couple other smaller things. The shock is a big item though. Always remember... just because its new does NOT mean it can't be bad.......

6/2/07      Fifth at Freedom

Wayland NY- Friday night- Freedom Raceway, After taking a second in the qualifier, Kyle drew the fifth starting position for the feature. By lap four he was knocking on the door for the lead. With a good run off of turn four he took it in deep into turn one. The car didn't want to stick like he thought. He locked it down, hitting the brakes hard spinning so not to take out the leader. Unfortunately two or three of the lesser experienced guys in the field ended up hitting each other and Kyle. On the restart it took only a couple laps for Kyle to realize the car wasn't quite right. He did a great job bringing it home with another top five finish.
With each race and more seat time Kyle is getting much better with these fender-ed cars. He has been running against some smaller fields but at the same time he has been running with guys with years of experience. You can see the improvement week to week. As Kyle has said, "I need to know where the edge is with these cars." I think last night he might have found at least one.
Weather permiting, we will be at McKean County tonight. Can't wait to see if they were able to put a track back together after last weeks problems.

5/28/07       The Down Side Of Racing

Wayland NY- Friday night- Raceway 7- Nice track, nice facility. This was the first time we had been to this track and we were impressed. We heard how the track is dry slick but it was one of the most tacky tracks we have ever seen. Kyle drew his usual high number, 50, which put him at the back of his qualifier. On the start a car two rows up didn't thus causing a chain reaction that ended up taking the right front fender of Kyle's car. He raced it any way. We had to do some body work before the feature.... something we have never had to do... sprint cars don't have fenders.... In the feature Kyle had just settled in to his groove and started picking off cars  when he was tagged in the left rear tire causing a spin, a flat, and a bent rim. He came pit side for a tire change but the restarted right away. So... he never rejoined the race. Finish of 19th. Not what we had wanted but.....
Saturday night, McKean County- We worked on the car all day at Tabers shop getting it ready for the night. We had some afternoon showers in Belfast but a call to the track said this were fine. Once we arrived at the track we found out things weren't fine. They had the track opened when rain showers came through. The track was a mess. Before the evening was through they had put forth a big effort but could not do anything with the track. Racing cancelled.
Sunday night, Eriez Speedway- What an improved track. We were impressed with what the new management has done. The rocks on the track are gone replaced with one a nd a half feet of new clay. When we arrived the surface was race ready and smooth. Unfortunately the rains came and the evening was cancelled.
So let's summarize.... a 19th and two rain outs... and about $200 spent on gas getting to the tracks... not a good weekend... We will get on track Friday night at Freedom.

5/19/07       Kyle Takes 3rd One More Time

Wayland NY- Third is a good finishing spot for a new guy, in a car type of car never driven, with a new group. Not that we are not happy with our 4th third place finish, but.... First or Second would be better. Actually finishing in the top three is a very good thing and we are proud of what Kyle has done. He is driving very consistent and has learned what to do to make the car work from the cockpit. The car has been very consistent but we just need to fine tune the handle just a little more. Last night the car was great getting in and great coming off but tight in the center of the turn. We need to fix this and I'm sure Tom will get it figured out. The finishes are getting much closer, now to just improve by a couple spots.
I can't say enough about this car and class. For the first time since we started racing 15 years ago we actually come home with more money then we started. The entire team is having a great time and racing is fun once more. Kyle's wins will come and in the not to far future.
Up next... Raceway 7 on Friday night.... we all need to see about time off... hoping to make it. Then we are at McKean on Saturday then off to Eriez on Sunday, a track Kyle loves????

5/13/07         And the Rains Came....

Wayland NY- McKean County racing was lost due to rain in the late afternoon into the early evening.... Freedom up again this coming Friday.....

5/12/07         Kyle Takes Third at Freedom! (Again)

Wayland NY- What could have been a terrible night turned out to a third place Finish. Keep in mind all parts on this car are new. That includes the ignition system that didn't want to work. Kyle missed his heat race and darn near missed his last place starting spot for the feature.
Kyle came from his last place spot up to fourth in no time. After spending 5 laps trying to get under the third place car, he finally did what he does best, he jumped to the top side and just blew around the guy. Once in third he had all he could do to gain ground on the two leaders who where now a straight away in front. Kyle closed the gap but just couldn't make a race of it. He finished the race with a right rear tire that was going flat.
On the tire front, Goodyear tires are now coming in to all dealers. We will be on Goodyears starting tonight at McKean County.

5/7/07 Opening Night at McKean County
Kyle Finishes Third!

5/7/07 Opening Night at McKean County
Kyle Finishes Third!

Wayland NY- Three seems to be the magic number but for now the only one complaining is Kyle. For the second night in a row he finished third in the feature coming for his fifth place starting spot. He actually drove to second by lap four. The track was dry and dust but Kyle's car worked great any where he drove it. On lap four a caution came out. At that time the two people who would finish in front of Kyle actually stopped on the front straight away and campaigned to have the track watered.... after the race had started!!! Never heard or saw such a thing. Well, they got their way as the water truck took the track and dumped a lot of water. For the next 30 minutes or more the cars packed the track. Once racing resumed, Kyle took the lead with the two in hot pursuit. Kyle lead for 4-5 laps before giving it up.
After the race we found out that the two that finished in front of Kyle have been driving late models for years and both have many many victories. So.... live and learn. With Kyle's car working as well as it was and their cars weren't he feels this victory was his. One would agree. Everyone set their cars up for the dry track. Some were fast some were not. The officials changed the track part way through the race, thus changing the out come.
Like it or not it is what it is. However, this weekend Kyle proved two things. One, he can drive these cars and many are convinced he can drive anything. Two, he is going to be one to be reckoned with.

5/5/07            Opening Night at Freedom
                      Kyle Finishes Third!

Wayland NY- What a week it was with the tire ordeal. In the end we could not get the Goodyears tire required but we aren't alone. Apparently there is a major shortage of these tires in the USA. We don't know all the details nor do we care at this time. We finally received approval to run American Racers and we let Bob Close get what we needed.
Last night at Freedom... due to track conditions we were not allowed hot laps. Let's see.... new driver, only a few laps in the car two weeks ago, new group.... seems fair. In the end it didn't mater. True to form  Kyle drew the last and 7th starting position in his heat race. It took him about three laps to get the handle on the car and the track before he started passing cars. He ended up 4th. Impressive.
Feature time came around with Kyle starting 4th. On the first lap he went to third. The top three then left the rest of the field behind stabilizing the distance between each other. Kyle continued to search for the faster line and finally found it. With lapped traffic and a good line Kyle was able to catch the leaders putting on a charge on the last lap. Going in to turn three he had his nose under the second place car but just couldn't make the complete pass at the end.
All in all the team is very pleased with this start. Kyle has much to learn in this car but has shown that he can drive anything. We will have to see how opening night at McKean County goes.

4/28/07        Racing for this Weekend a Washout!
A Tire Controversy in the Making????

Wayland NY- Racing for both Freedom and McKean was cancelled early Friday morning. Both areas received heavy rains Thursday night and both track pit areas were already very wet. We will have to see what this coming weekend brings.
The real story is the tire situation. Fastrak has a tire rule... us must run Goodyears of their choosing. No problem. Kyle actually had a Goodyear tire deal a few years ago until Hoosiers were made mandatory, so we have no problem with the tires. But.... none available ..... ya can't buy the tires required.... Mid week last week the rule was open up to allow the same durometer of American Racer. So we secure American Racers for this weekend of cancelled racing. Now hearing they may go back to the Goodyears if they are available for next weekend..... What to hey..... This is now way to endear your supporting teams and drivers. In makes the entire Fastrak thing look bad. I suspect it is due to the fast growth of the series but management should have been on top of it. We will have to see what happens.

4/15/07     Ready to Race!!!

Wayland NY- Well... The driver is ready, team is ready, the car is ready, the only thing NOT is the weather. The car is going to be housed 90% of the time at the Taber Race shop in Belfast. We were over there yesterday to go through the car and fire the engine.... The engine sounds great. Kyle got several laps around the famous Taber Race track, otherwise known as a field of clover... I think their are going to be a lot of surprised people with this crate engine. The thing goes get up and go!
Next up... Wednesday or Thursday night a trip to Close Racing to do a final setup check and some tire mounting. Then it is a day of testing at McKean on Saturday and a day of testing at Freedom on Sunday. We sure hope the weather cooperates.. "got the fever"!

4/6/07 Kyle to be on "Life In The Fast Lane" on Monday 4/9/07
